The first part in a series of Symphonic Dances written by Leonard Bernstein after the famous Broadway hit. This was a way for orchestras to preform works from the musical in a more symphonic way. Through the adding of many instruments including harp and viola that did not exist in the earlier version. This also removed the musical's use of reed instrumentation. In which instead of parts for each woodwind, 5 woodwind players would constantly change instruments to minimize the amount of players.
