In 1801 During his early 30's Ludwig van Beethoven had completed his 14th piano sonata who he dedicated to in 1802 to his piano student Giulietta Guicciardi in 1802 who he was apparently infatuated with. It was a piece both popular in his time and even today. The name you are most familiar with was not popularized until in 1832, five years after the composers death when the music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab compared the first movement to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne.
