You guys are gonna be so proud of me! It's (technically) not the Ink Spots!
The Brown Dots were a group from the same period of time, that formed when Deek Watson and Bill Kenny stopped getting along. Deek Watson left the Ink Spots and formed a new group that was also named The Ink Spots, to copy the original as closely as possible, probably to compete with them out of spite. Bill Kenny took him to court over it, and that was when Deek Watson changed the name to "The Brown Dots" and basically did the exact same thing, as you can tell by their use of that familiar intro that the Ink Spots used in most of their songs.
Some controversy surrounds this song, or more specifically, who actually wrote it. Some sources say that Deek Watson wrote the lyrics to it, and Pat Best wrote the music, however, Pat Best also claims that he wrote it while he was a teenager, all by himself. People use Best's claim to refute Watson's, but to refute Best's claim, people say that a middle/high schooler would be too immature to write a song about getting sentimental over a girl. Regardless of both of these arguments, I have credited the lyrics to Watson and the composition to Best, as it felt safer to include both names in the credits.
