This arrangement has been my Spring project. Usually, my "arrangements" are closer to improvisations, but this one I actually wrote out note-for-note. You can find my performance here: https://youtu.be/Zez5PPS2xTk
This arrangement plays off various lyrics from the hymn. Verse one sings of God being our light "by day or by night" and this is symbolized by shifting between major and minor keys in the verse and surrounding interludes. Verse two focuses on an intimate relationship with God our Father, concluding "I with Thee one." This is reflected in a close texture ending with a unison. Verse three opens, "Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praises." I sought to capture this thought of worldly passions in a swirling, slightly chaotic texture that resolves in strong consonance in the next bar ("Thou my inheritance"). The final verse is a majestic salute to the "High King of heaven."
