This is an abstract piece I wrote for MZ’s competition. The beauty of this piece is the absence of an extravagant melody, or clever harmonies. The simplicity of it shines beauty, like the crestfallen moon hopelessly attempting to uncover the universal secrets of the night. Hopelessly the piece drifts on, leaving the listener in a state of consciousness only describable as the concept of eternity, while gazing into the infinite void of the midnight sky. Thus, this piece, in all of its simplicity, shows us the fundamental principles of humankind.
The first principle that is present is in the concept of emptiness. The profound feeling that our lives do not matter in the eyes of death turns a thought towards the executive power of death over life. Death is the result of life. Life is the result of death. They are codependent upon each other, and in the end, death is the great equalizer. Nobody will ever be able to make their lives matter. In the end, all of our creations, all of our thoughts, all of our loved ones, all of our achievements-they will all die with us, and then be forgotten.
When you look at how we work through our dealings in life, we so frequently are met with the concept of evil. Some of us find it constantly in others, while some of us find it in ourselves. The concept of evil is so difficult to comprehend: how could someone do this? This brings up the concept of a greater good. Is not the greater good the good for ourselves? If we sacrifice one person for a hundred, is that one person’s suffering invalid? Therefore, the evil man does not what is best for others, but for himself. My piece represents the emptiness of the logic of wrongdoings.
The feeling of emptiness that accompanies a harsh loss, or several losses, also is represented in this piece. This is a true, valid feeling. The feeling that there is nothing left for you, that you are simply waiting, waiting for an end. This is such a constant feeling that is all around us. A powerful moment
