During World War II, faraway lovers often corresponded by letter, creating a treasure trove of romantic history long cherished and tenderly preserved.
However, letters exchanged between gay sweethearts were systematically destroyed, often by the recipients themselves. Because homosexuality was illegal and considered highly immoral, these men's love letters would have been seen as evidence of a contemptible crime, rather than as something beautiful to be treasured. As a result, precious few gay love letters from WWII still exist today.
These lyrics are inspired by the surviving letters of two clandestine couples. Their stories illustrate that against all odds, their love bloomed in its time, a secret longing to be free.
