After Raymond and his company exit the northern mouth of the Living River, they enter into the Bay of Mirage. This bay is not a horrid place, as the waters in it are always calm. They are almost too calm, and there is a constant haze in the distance making it hard to see where they are. In its calmness, there comes a price.
"They say there's a beast that roams these waters," Colston says to Raymond.
"Now what would that be?"
"A vicious creature. One that'll rip straight through the Zephyr," Colston says. "She hides in the depths and waits for anything that could disturb the waters. It's best we keep quiet."
They both lean over the edge of the Zephyr to look at the water below. For now it is calm, and they all hope the calmness will stay.
