Hey everyone! Piece is my submission to this month's composition challenge with the theme of Trick or Treat. I envision it to follow a "Tom and Jerry" style cartoon with a lone trick or treater. Below is my description of the story the piece follows. I hope you enjoy!
The first movement, entitled Spectroscopic Trickery, follows a trick or treater lost in their own neighborhood. The confused state of mind of the lost soul is represented in this movement by strange dissonance, rapidly changing motifs, and an overall uneasy beat pattern. It comes to a close when the trick or treater sees all the lights in the neighborhood go out . . . with the exception of one.
The second movement, entitled Sweet Bells of Death, follows the same trick or treater as they proceed to knock on the door of the single lit house. The movement opens with the sound of the doorbell in a calming manner. Seconds later the house's resident burst out of the door and candy flew everywhere. The heartbeat of the poor soul who dared knock is heard in a strong baseline thump in the bass clef. Flurries fly as the two lock eyes. Swiftly, the lone trick or treater grabs a chocolate bar and makes a run for. The energetic and sporadic runs that follow depict the fleeing soul while the house's resident's footsteps can be heard in the bass clef thumping the same as the heart beat before. The movement suddenly turns brighter as the once lost trick or treater finds his home at last and dashes through the door, closing the movement with a slam of the door.
The third movement, entitled Cocoa Bliss, ends the saga of the trick or treater as they collapse to the floor with a slower and more steady heart rate. In their dashing escape, they nearly forgot they grabbed a chocolate bar. As they begin to unwrap the bar, the emotions of the night wash over them. Then they take a bite, and everything fades away. A delectable bliss overwhelms them, and the night fades into the oblivion of peaceful sleep.
