I started composing during the COVID lockdowns with no musical knowledge except for basic clarinet skills.
Last October, I decided to take composition more seriously and make my account public. I also met a new friend who later became my girlfriend. I love you so much, my butterfly. Thank you for always supporting my music.
I wrote a few good songs in December, but I really hit my stride when I wrote The Black Hat on January 4th. I wasn’t a very well known composer on Flat yet, but a few people seemed to like this piece. I later reposted it around 100 followers, and removed it once more. So, there may be some old comments which I’m excited to read!
Now, here we are in October 2024, around my one year anniversary of first publishing on Flat, and the final version of The Black Hat is ready, I’m a multi-instrumentalist, a poet, first chair of the clarinet section in band, an honors student, I have the best girlfriend I could ever ask for, amazing friends, 140+ followers and I’m Composer of the Month in a global community of 5mil+ musicians. Life is good!
Being COTM is a major milestone in my music journey and I’m really proud of myself for working over the past years to improve my music. I’ve met great musicians, made amazing friends and built a small community of my own here on Flat.
You know, there’s something special about a place like Flat. We’re a thriving community of artists of all backgrounds and skill levels. On this site, we create, we help, we tell stories, we share, we learn, we heal and we discover.
So, about this piece - I decided to go for a jazzy mallsoft style. I’m pretty happy with the final result. (btw, when I wrote this, I didn’t have Power yet, so I needed to use triplets to swing. I’m keeping it that way for the history.)
That’s about all I have to say. I’m so thankful for everybody that’s supported me on my journey so far, and there’s more music to come!
With love and undying appreciation, - SquiddyCuh <3
