This piece is my submission to this month's composition challenge with the theme of The Lambda CDM Big Bang Theory. As a college student studying a science and music, it sort of feels like this challenge was made for me, so I really appreciate this opportunity.
This piece is a Concerto for Synthesizer and Orchestra. The opening depicts the compression of matter before the big bang as a slow and methodical compression. Almost random, but, eventually, the mass gets lucky enough. It hits just the right configuration of matter.
An astounding silence is interrupted by an explosion of sound depicting a the creation of quarks, subatomic particles, elements, molecules, and forms of matter manifesting from the cataclysm. The explosive theme is interrupted by a bell like melody that shows the peace and stability in-between new forms of matter. Each time the explosive theme remerges, it's separated by longer and longer periods of time. The expansion of the universe slows the rate at which new things come to be. Eventually the two melodies clash and resolve.
A state of calm forms with an equilibrium of galaxies, stars, and nebulae that is calm and methodical like the pizzicato and slow melody of the third section. The music slows even further as the Earth is formed. Nothing seems to have changed in the universe, however something begins to rise.
The horns call this rising to action as water begins to cover the planet post it's cooling. The synthesizer calls to the newly formed oceans recognizing the formation of something new, and suddenly, the whole orchestra rouses to announce the true arrival of complex and majestic life covering the planet. A small piece of beauty in an ever expanding universe.
I have to be honest. This piece is one that I've become very proud of over the past month. I really hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!
