Hello!
So here is my solo piece for the 3rd round of the Legends Comp. It is a 4 mallet solo for a 3 octave vibraphone. I was hesitating on whether I should submit this so early, but then I decided just to publish and not submit to the comp yet, in case I decide to change anything. The reason being that I just like sharing my music with people. Honestly, the fact that
@nm_studios confirmed it could be less than 4 minutes was a lifesaver cus I realized that there was so much I wanted to do with this piece but I had already gotten to 3 minutes lmao.
For my solo, I chose to base it on Maladaptive Daydreaming, as per suggestion from my friend who struggles with it himself. Maladaptive daydreaming is basically just severe/extra long/extremely vivid daydreams that make focusing and completing tasks very difficult, and as you can imagine, would disrupt someone's daily flow. People with this usually struggle to even break out of these intense daydreams, and it can even cause insomnia and other minor symptoms that are similar to what is seen in ADHD.
While I could argue that the style of music used here is minimalism, due to the repeating melody, I would say I used a more impressionism style when creating this piece. Impressionism music is typically created with a focus on creating moods and emotions, and what those emotions would "sound" like. They are also usually connected to nature, and imo daydreaming is natural sooo.... During the first days of creation, I thought and played around a lot trying to encapsulate the two different themes in the piece: Reality and Daydreaming/Out of Reality. I really wanted to show how daydreams interfere with the stillness of reality, but also how they are both similar. I hope you can hear these things when you are listening!
Also yes, I have tested it personally and the whole piece is playable (though you need some serious chops for some parts). I didn't add sticking in the sheet music cus I'm lazy.
Enjoy!
