I was debating publishing this, but I haven’t published in a while so I figured I would.
This is a short piece for orchestra entitled “Perseverance Red.” It was written for a school project in which we had to represent a survival trait and a related color through creative means. In addition to this I had to write a short narrative and an artist statement and form submission, excerpts of which will be below.
“I chose to write a musical score for my creative representation. To fully represent my survival color, trait, and narrative, I chose to divide the score into multiple sections. The first, in C Major, represents the first paragraph of the narrative with its ambiguity, modulation, and failure to reach a consonant, stable, ending chord…. The second section, with a horn solo and powerful atmosphere, represents the willpower of the character, persevering to find his way home. The third section, waltz-like, is more lighthearted to symbolize the relief at the end of the story. And finally, the fourth section, recapitulates the second section up a major second and then up a major third. These upward increases in key represent a brighter part of the circle of fifths and a brighter perspective from the character on life after escaping and getting home.”
“Section 1: C Major (A-Flat Major) Slow, expressive, desolate: symbolizes the hopelessness he felt and the desperation from the first paragraph. Section 2: A Minor Bombastic, powerful, inspired: represents the perseverance he exhibited in the second paragraph. Section 3: A Major Light, lively, joyous: expresses the relief of escaping in the third paragraph. Section 4: B Minor - C# Minor (picardy third) Recapitulation of second section, remarking on his perseverance.
Instrumentation: Woodwinds (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon) Brass (1-2 horns, 1 trumpet, 4 trombones) Strings (adequate sections in declining number of violin I, violin II, viola, cello, and bass)."
