A gay boy sits at a New Years Party, after his first semester of college, recounting what he learned throughout the past year. He then starts to think about what resolutions he might want to make, but his self-doubt arises. He is unable to come up with anything. Then he realizes, he is dictated by tradition and social norms, and what everyone around him tells him he should be. As such, he resolves to become his own person, and to be himself.
The timpani represents his heartbeat, and the passage of time. It regularly plays, throughout the song, never skipping a beat.
The "Truly Free" motif, along with the repeated piano melody, is the hopeful motif, and also represents the passage of time as well. The last appearance of the Truly Free motif, the one where the boy sings, is also the climax of the song.
