heya! might be a little late to the monthly challenge, but i made a piece just 'cause :) this is my first published composition i made on flat's software, so i really hope you guys enjoy!
my zodiac is the tiger! this composition explores some internal conflict nearing the events of the jade emperor's ceremony. at first, i was a little stuck, struggling with how to execute this project - so, i made a poem called "to nock a broken arrow" inspired by the monthly challenge (i'll link it below). so, without further ado, here's an analysis of this piece's narrative;
i - we are introduced to some soft, slow woodwind melodies representing a tranquil body of water. the tiger joins in as a harp, stringing a pentatonic-based motif that sort of goes against (but doesn't defy) the current key, shifting the water along with it. at m. 15, something clicks, and the tiger prepares to go to the training grounds.
ii - the monkey is introduced as a dueling partner, characterized by abrupt percussive instruments and introducing a 4/4 time. the tiger has to adapt to this by modifying his motif to be fast-paced, as he takes his reflection at the lake to heart.
iii - after he defeats the monkey, he prepares for the ceremony, both the past and future events of the day still processing in his mind, broken motifs scattering the section. with the wind's new chords, and the bass drums beating loudly, he finally realizes what must happen.
iv & v - the lake motif from the start becomes louder, reminding the tiger of what is expected - a vile opponent to be feared as a stubborn, valiant competitor. right before the race, he reflects on what he has learned; his motif from the start shifting to a pentatonic scale that better fits the mold of what the key allows for. with a new found determination, he proclaims; i will prove them right.
