"Is there anything else you want to share about your score?" The piece begins with a playful pizzicato, which shows us the idea being born in the head of our protagonist: John (actually it could be any name, but there you have it). John is thinking about faking his death to scare his friend David. The idea is conceived and realized when the suspended cymbal reaches its highest point, and the saxophone motif gives us an idea of John's crazy joke. The melody is quickly complemented by the pizzicato strings responding to the saxophones. This represents the plan forming step by step to make the joke as realistic as possible. The guitar represents the speed with which the boy runs home to get the materials for his joke. The B section represents the hard work John puts into building a coffin day and night (Visualize a time-lapse). John finishes the coffin in measures 13 to 14, which represents victory after hard work. Measure 15 | The beginning of the joke: David goes to his friend's house like every day, but this time he doesn't find him, but instead finds a coffin with his friend inside. This distresses him so much that he breaks down in tears of despair, while asking himself: "How could this happen?" In measure 21, we see the void that John leaves in David's life. Then the nostalgia begins. David remembers all the beautiful moments he spent with John, the laughter at his silly jokes, the unforgettable experiences... they are nothing now. It's all over. He turns around to go back home, starts walking. He is devastated; he was his best friend for life, and now he is no longer here. Measure 26: As he walks slowly home, someone touches him on the shoulder from behind. Yes, it's John. They join in a brotherly hug. There is no time for explanations; he simply feels that his friend has come back to life. 🙂
